Set shipping rules for carrier partners

Set shipping rules for carrier partners

What is a shipping rule?

A shipping rule refers to a set of guidelines or conditions that determine how a product will be shipped from the merchant to the customer.

Why is the shipping rule needed?

Shipping rule is needed because of the below few points-
  1. Consistency: By setting clear and consistent shipping rules, e-commerce merchants can ensure that customers understand the shipping options available to them and can make informed decisions about how to receive their orders. This helps to avoid confusion and uncertainty in the shipping process.
  2. Cost management: Shipping rules can help e-commerce merchants manage shipping costs by setting minimum order values for free shipping, offering flat-rate shipping options, or specifying carrier or shipping methods that are more cost-effective.
  3. Customer satisfaction: Shipping rules can help to improve customer satisfaction by offering a range of shipping options that meet different customer needs and preferences.
  4. Operational efficiency: Shipping rules can help to streamline the order fulfillment process by providing clear guidelines for how orders should be shipped, reducing the risk of errors or delays in the shipping process.

How to set shipping rules?

There are five types of shipping rules: by product weight, by product weight or volumetric weight, by payment mode, by product category and by Invoice value.

1) BY PRODUCT WEIGHT:

In this, you can define the weight range and respective carrier partners to be assigned.
For example, if the order weight is less than 90g, the order should be assigned to Delhivery OR if the product weight falls between 100-200 g, the order should be assigned to BlueDart.

To set the shipping rule, follow the below process-

STEP 1: Choose the operator (less than, more than, range1, range 2, range 3).

STEP 2: Enter the value. This is the weight of the order in grams. Minimum and maximum value excludes the number added. For example, if you enter 100 and 500 in the min and max values, it will consider the order's weight between 100.1 and 499.99.

STEP 3: Select the carrier. You can add multiple carriers for the same shipping rule. Whatever carrier partner you entered first will be automatically on priority 1. If you add more carriers, it will automatically be prioritized (priority 2, 3, etc). If you wish to change the priority of any carrier, you have to change the carrier from the dropdown.

STEP 4: Click on 'Submit'. You have completed setting up shipping rules.

Use cases:

a) Within a shipping rule, if the first carrier (number 1 priority) is invalid/inactive, the shipping will go to the next carrier which is on priority 2, and so on.

b) Within a shipping rule, if all the carriers are inactive, at the time of shipping the order, it will show an error on the orders page.

c) If the weight is out of range, it will go to the carrier, which is the number 1 priority in carrier master.
For example, you have set 2 rules: 1) between 100g to 190g - Bluedart; 2) between 200g to 400g - Delhivery. In case an order comes in with a weight of 195g since this weight is not defined in any of the ranges, this will go to the carrier which is on number 1 priority on the carrier master page.

d) You cannot overlap the weight between different rules. For example, you cannot enter 150g - 200g and 180g - 400g because 180g - 200g is overlapping.

2) BY PRODUCT WEIGHT OR VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT (whichever is higher)

Volumetric weight is L*B*H (in cm)/5000. In 90% of cases, the Divisor will be constant, but in 10%, it can be based on the courier. We need to store this on the company-carrier level, so keep the provision for the courier-wise Divisor.
In the case of multi-item, the total volumetric weight will be the sum of individual volumetric weights of each item.

To set the shipping rule, follow the below process-

STEP 1: Choose the operator (less than, more than, range1, range 2, range 3).

STEP 2: Enter the value. This is the weight of the order in grams. Minimum and maximum value excludes the number added. For example, if you enter 100 and 400 in the min and max values, it will consider the order's weight between 100.1 and 399.99.

3) BY PAYMENT MODE:

In this, you can set rules based on COD and Prepaid and assign carrier partners accordingly.
For example, if the order is prepaid, it should be assigned to Delhivery, OR if the order is COD, it should be assigned to BlueDart.

To set the shipping rule, follow the below process-

STEP 1: Click on 'Add Carrier'.

STEP 2: Select the carrier. You can add multiple carriers under the  COD or Prepaid option. Whatever carrier partner you entered first will be automatically on priority 1. If you add more carriers, it will automatically be prioritized (priority 2, 3, etc). If you wish to change the priority of any carrier, you have to change the carrier from the dropdown.

STEP 3: Click on 'Submit'. You have completed setting up shipping rules based on payment mode.

Use cases:

a) Within a shipping rule, if the first carrier (number 1 priority) is invalid/inactive, the shipping will go to the next carrier which is on priority 2, and so on.

b) Within a shipping rule, if all the carriers are inactive, at the time of shipping the order, it will show an error on the orders page.

c) Other than prepaid and COD orders, the rules will not be changed. The carrier partner will be assigned based on the carrier masters page.

4) BY PRODUCT CATEGORY:

In this, you can assign delivery partners based on the product category. For example, if the product's category is clothing, it should be assigned to Bluedart.

To set the shipping rule, follow the below process-

STEP 1: Choose a category.

Select a category from the dropdown menu which displays all the categories listed on the category master page.

You can select multiple categories for a single shipping rule.

STEP 2: Select the carrier. You can add multiple carriers for the same shipping rule. Whatever carrier partner you entered first will be automatically on priority 1. If you add more carriers, it will automatically be prioritized (priority 2, 3, etc.). If you wish to change the priority of any carrier, you have to change the carrier from the dropdown.

STEP 3: Set Multi-category rule priority

This is helpful in case an order contains multiple product categories and those categories have different shipping rules defined.

In the above screenshot, 2 shipping rules have been added. The first rule is for mobile, fashion, books, and toys. The second rule is for the pen category.
Suppose, an order comes in which contains SKUs from books and pen categories. In this case, the shipping rule which is on Rule Priority 1 will be considered for order assignment (i.e. Pickrr logistics from the above screenshot)

Use cases:

a) Within a shipping rule, if the first carrier (number 1 priority) is invalid/inactive, the shipping will go to the next carrier which is on priority 2, and so on.

b) Within a shipping rule, if all the carriers are inactive, it will show an error on the orders page when shipping the order.

c) If an order is received for a product category that doesn't have a defined shipping rule, the carrier partner will be assigned based on the carrier masters page, as there is no rule specified for that category.

d) In case an order contains SKUs from multiple categories and the shipping rule is only defined for some of those categories, the carrier partner will be assigned based on the category where the shipping rule is specified.

Suppose there are four categories: mobile, books, pen, and shoes, and the shipping rule is specified only for mobile, books, and pens. If an order is placed for the books and shoes categories, the shipping rule defined for books will be taken into consideration and the order will be assigned based on that particular shipping rule.

History:

The history tab reflects all the changes that have been made to the shipping rule settings along with the time and the user details.

5) BY INVOICE VALUE

In this case, the user can specify the invoice value for the carrier. For example, if the invoice value is between 0 and 500, one specific carrier will deliver the package. However, if the invoice value is between 500 and 1000, a different carrier will deliver the package.

To set the shipping rule, follow the below process-

STEP 1: Choose the operator (less than, more than, range1, range 2, range 3).

STEP 2: Enter the value. Minimum and maximum value excludes the number added. For example, if you enter 100 and 500 in the min and max values, it will consider the order's invoice value between 100.1 and 499.99.
